About AEC Elections

An Alcohol Education Committee (AEC) is a group of locally elected members who work together and with the community to reduce the negative effects of alcohol. They provide education concerning responsible alcohol use, and may also organize other community services and programs. AECs also regulate the purchase, sale and import of alcohol in their respective communities. They fall under the jurisdiction of the Liquor Act, rather than the Nunavut Elections Act.

Elections Nunavut administers the Alcohol Education Committee (AEC) elections under the Liquor Plebiscites and Elections Regulations and through an agreement with the Department of Finance. Elections for the AEC are held at the same time as municipal elections every four years.
